How to use the map
On the map page there are several different elements which are as follows:
The Location Map Window
- Directly beneath the menu, this small map shows the location within the District of whatever you are looking at in the Main Map Window.
The Key Window
- Directly beneath the Location Map Window, the Key displays the shading used to represent each policy.
- The policies take the form of 'layers' which sit on top of each other and can be turned on and off as required, as if they were transparent plastic overlays on a paper map.
- Use the tick box next to each layer to turn it on and off, or use the features at the top of the key to turn all the layers on or off at once.
Main Map Window
- In the centre of the screen is the Main Map Window.
- When you first view the map the whole District is displayed as a light purple area.
- The light brown areas represent towns and villages in and around the District.
- Major roads are also shown, as well as railways and rivers.
- To see more detail and display the layers use the Scale Bar or Zoom Tool.
- There is a series of triangles around the edge of the map. Clicking on one of these moves the map in the direction the arrow is pointing.
- You can also move around the map by using the Panning Tool (see below).
- Road names, house numbers and some labelling only appear when you have zoomed right in to the map.
Scale Bar
- The Scale Bar is the series of circles to the right of the main map window.
- There are eight set scales at which you can view the map in increasing detail. Click on the plus or minus symbol to move between the scales one level at a time, or click on any of the circles to jump straight to that scale.
- The scale at which you are viewing the map is displayed beneath the main map window.
- At 1:100,000 the light purple district shading disappears to be replaced by the dashed and dotted district line as displayed in the key.
- At 1:50,000 the urban areas and woodland disappear to be replaced by the layers.
- At 1:25,000 the main roads and railways disappear to be replaced by a more detailed map.
Map Tools
Beneath the Main Map Window are the three Map Tools. They are as follows:
Zoom Tool
- Represented by the magnifying glass, when you select this tool your cursor becomes a cross when you move it over the map.
- Click and hold your mouse button and drag with the mouse to draw a red box on the map over the area you wish to view in greater detail. When you let go the map is redrawn to the nearest scale matching your box.
Panning Tool
- Represented by four arrows, when you select this tool your cursor becomes a hand with a pointing finger.
- Click once on the map and it redraws with the area you pointed at as the centre of the map.
- Using this you can move about the map more freely than with the triangles round the edge.
Info Tool
- Represented by the letter 'i', when you select this tool your cursor becomes an arrow with a question mark.
- Click on the map and an information box appears to tell you which policies cover the area you clicked on (whether or not you have them displayed on the map).
- There is a link with each policy to the relevant section of the written statement.
- After viewing the written statement use your browser's back button to return to the map.
- Note: the Info Tool is the default tool for your cursor.
Tips
- Maximise your browser window for the best access to the various tools.
- The map contains many layers, some on top of others. Turn off layers for a better view of the ones underneath.
- A good starting point is to turn off all the layers then turn on just the ones in which you are interested.
