AAS7 | Welwyn | A substantial late Iron Age and Romano-British settlement lies at Welwyn. A Late Iron Age cremation cemetery including two Chieftain's burials was discovered close to the Civic Centre in the early years of the century. The nucleus of a Romano-British settlement, possibly a village or a small town, is known to lie to the north of the Manor House, and a Romano-British cemetery lies to the east of the River Mimram. Two Roman villa sites are known at Lockleys and Dicket Mead. Both are Scheduled Ancient Monuments. Welwyn is also a medieval village recorded in Domesday Book as 'Wilye'. The parish church of St. Mary dates from the 13th Century. |

Excavation in Hatfield has produced evidence of medieval residential and industrial occupation. Hatfield House is one of the finest Jacobean mansions in England. |

AAS23 | Mesolithic and Neolithic Occupation, Thorntons Farm | Excavation has revealed occupation sites of the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods. A number of casual finds of Mesolithic and Neolithic flint implements have also been made in the area. |
